Science Expo, Ruckersville Elementary School, VA
March 2017
In March 2017, I was part of a science expo organized by graduate students at the University of Virginia for the Ruckersville Elementary School students. This 1 day event brings graduate students from various scientific disciplines to lead activities and demos for children (ages 4-12). I co-led a climate change activity and recruited other graduate students from my department to set up a geology demo.
GeoX Camp Counselor and Undergraduate Recruitor, Texas A&M
May 2012 - May 2015
In May 2012, I was a counselor for Texas A&M's College of Geosciences recruitment camp. This camp targets ~20 high school students from underrepresented backgrounds, to expose them to the various disciplines within geosciences. We led activities in geology, coastal morphology, atmospheric sciences, geography, oceanography, and provided guidance and motivation regarding college life.
As an undergraduate recruiter, part of my job was to follow up with the high school students I had counseled over the summer to facilitate their college application process.
Volunteer at the Oceanographic Institute of Paris, France
April 2007
In April 2007, I volunteered for one week at the Oceanographic Institute of Paris, France. This was an opportunity for me to shadow people who worked in aquarium management, as well as public outreach and education regarding marine resources. I was involved in several educational activities for children (K-6) visiting the institute.
